Does my Australian document need an Apostille for use in China?
Generally yes. Since China acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention on 7 November 2023, Australian public documents formally used in mainland China usually require an Apostille issued by the Australian competent authority to verify the signature, seal or identity of the signatory on the original document. Chinese Embassy Apostille Notice →
Translation and Apostille are different procedures: NAATI translation converts the English content into Chinese; Apostille verifies the issuing identity of the Australian public document, issued by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). DFAT Document Legalisation →
There is no fixed order for all documents. Some authorities require the original document to be Apostilled first, then translated together with the Apostille page; others only require a Chinese translation. Confirm with the receiving authority whether the original, the translation, or both need authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
Standard certificates such as birth and death certificates are A$80 each and usually completed within 24 business hours after payment with clear documents. Non-standard documents such as marriage certificates, police clearances, academic records, corporate, legal and medical files are quoted after review based on pages, word count, specialist content and format. The fee includes NAATI-certified translation, translator statement, NAATI digital stamp and PDF delivery.
Is NAATI translation the same as Apostille?
No. NAATI translation explains the content of the document; Apostille verifies the signature, seal or identity of the signatory on the Australian public document.
Will I receive a digital stamp or a blue wet stamp? Do I need to mail the original?
We generally provide a PDF translation with a NAATI digital stamp. The NAATI digital stamp has equivalent effect to a physical stamp and is suitable for most online uploads or for printing in colour before submission. You usually do not need to mail the original document. If your receiving authority specifically requires a wet blue stamp or a hard copy, please contact us before proceeding.
Can an Australian birth certificate translation be used to register my child’s household in China?
Translated Australian birth certificates are commonly used for household registration (hukou), school enrolment or family relationship procedures in China. Requirements vary between local police stations, schools and notary offices; some authorities also require the Australian birth certificate to be Apostilled first. Confirm the required document combination with the actual receiving authority before proceeding.
Should Apostille be done before or after translation?
There is no fixed order. Some authorities require the original to be Apostilled first and then translated together with the Apostille page; others only require a Chinese translation. Confirm whether the receiving authority needs the original, the translation, or a combination authenticated.
Can complex contracts, court or medical documents be translated?
Yes. Complex documents require a review of the content first to confirm scope, format and turnaround.
